Newborn Elephant

Born 3-27-09 to Phoebe and Coco. Weight at birth was 303 lbs. Delivered around 2:30 p.m. in the North Elephant Yard. This is the only photo I could find of him (it doesn't look that authentic so don't quote me). The moment I find more pictures of him I will post them.

is it usual for a newborn elephant to be given access to an outside enclosure so soon after birth?

Yes - the birth happened at 2:35 pm in the northern section of the North Yard. She was outside and we werent prepared at all for a birth during the day since 99% of the time its between 12 am and 6 am. A very rewarding day for some lucky zoo visitors!

I have yet to see a baby elephant though I'll shall hopefully only have to wait for about another 8 months.
