Nico's birth year is estimated as 1961, making him fifty last year. There were several press articles about his 'birthday' though of course he can't actually have one. He also has the distinction of currently being the oldest male Gorilla in Europe.
Apart from Snowflake he is the whitest/most silver male I've ever seen. Some years ago he spent a winter on 'breeding loan' at Bristol Zoo, along with his (then) female partner female 'Samba'. So I was able to see him closeup. At that time he was a normal darker colour though already with quite extensive silvering. He's also poorly socialised from his background and wouldn't adjust to a trial introduction to another female at Bristol, in fact he was very aggressive, so its perhaps unlikely he would have adapted to another mate, if one had been tried, at Longleat after Samba died.
But the presence of other Gorillas nearby may enrich his solitary life a bit- if he can see them that is.
