Nocturnal House

August 19, 2024
Do you still remember the lineup of the nocturnal house during your visit?

The lineup during my latest visit were:
  • Javan palm civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus javanus)
  • Balinese palm civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus balicus)
  • Gunung Muria small civet (Viverricula indica muriavensis)
  • Sumatran masked palm civet (Paguma larvata leucomystax)
  • Four-toed hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris)
  • Buffy fish owl (Ketupa ketupu ketupu)
  • Papuan sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps papuanus)
  • Javan small-toothed palm civet (Arctogalidia trivirgata trilineata)

There's 9 exhibits in the Nocturnal House, plus a big Aquarium tank in the middle of the tunnel, then 20 average-sized reptile exhibits and 10 large-sized reptile exhibits. So, overall I counted exactly 40 total exhibits within this part of the zoo.

@twilighter will probably have the species line-up, but it should be very similar to what you have there. I definitely don't recall FIVE civet species though!

@snowleopard I counted eight species, the ninth exhibit was empty and "under maintenance" during my last visit (Formerly housed Sulawesi dwarf cuscus, the pair's status is unknown).

Though it had to be noted that civets, especially Javan or Sunda palm civets, are quite a staple and a go-to group of animals in an Indonesian nocturnal/small mammal house (Except Batu, which have the priviliege of having more small mammals). Though I agree that they need a more varied animals here (Especially didn't need to have the owl, sugar gliders, and hedgehog!).

@Rizz Carlton I assume you consider the strange animal labeled Wet Zone Golden Palm Civet as a Balinese Palm Civet? It was intresting debate in ZooChat about the animal in question.

Me and @snowleopard saw exactly the same line up.

Javan Palm Civet is labelled Comman Palm Civet.

We saw the Small Indian Civet and the Sumatran Masked Civet

Javan small-toothed palm civet was labelled, but I don't think we saw the animal. We saw the spieces at Prigen Conservation Breeding Ark.

@twilighter It should be, palm civets of those colors are often referred in Indonesia as "musang Bali" (Bali civet). Though wether this is an actual subspecies rather than a color morph is still questioned. Its obviously not the labelled species, the species most likely never entered Indonesia in the first place.
