There don't seem to be any natural substrates available for the otters. Does an outside enclosure exist or is this it ? If the answer is yes, then this must be one of the worlds worst otter enclosures !? It is over 30 years ago that Dr. Nicole Duplaix has published minimum standars for otters and some zoos still dont seem to be able to learn that an otter is not a fish - or even a seal...
It isn't a great otter exhibit. It is really weird. No outdoor exhibit exists. There is some more to the exhibit that you can't see. It is multi-leveled so there is more land area for the otters.
Thank you. This is only slightly encouraging although. Natural substrates for the otters to play, dig and groom should be considered essential in this day and age - same for an outside enclosure of course ! One has to wonder what the designers of this enclosure knew about otters when this was planned ...
The otter exhibit is not very impressive at all because it is tiny and lacks natural substrate. The main "tube" section has layers to it and then the otters can use the slide on the right to access the bottom area.
