Northern cardinal

Jan. 3 2014 near Escarcega
Nice picture to remind people of how many common wild birds of the U.S. migrate and depend on the conservation of natural spaces in Mexico and central america.

Nice shot. It is entirely true that many U.S. bird species migrate south to spend the winter in Mexico or further south, but the northern cardinal is largely a resident species. Northern cardinals in USA typically stay there all year round, and northern cardinals in Mexican stay there all year round. Of all the recognized northern cardinal races, more than 2/3 are endemic to (=only found in) Mexico.
