Northern tree shrew

Tupaia belangeri.
I was surprised to see this guy in the old butterfly cage, which is long and narrow, but it worked well for this small active species, giving really good views. Insect House, Burford 12th August 2010

I checked on ISIS, although I know that's not 100% reliable. Isn't the shoulder stripe characteristic of this species? It's the only specimen they have and it certainly appears to be adult.

several of the tree shrews have the shoulder stripe -- it makes identifying them in the wild very annoying because many of them look so similar, even when you've only got a limited choice within their respective ranges. I understand all (?) the Tupaia in the UK are listed as either belangeri or glis -- is that right? Both of those are so similar that they were formerly considered conspecific. There's just something about this one that I can't put my finger on that looks odd.

There aren't many around at the moment, but I think all are glis/belangeri as you say. Forty years ago there were tana and minor in the Clore. It is possible that there are others in universities or collections like the Wellcome Institute - but if so, I know nothing about them. I will have to find the right reference book.

if the founder stock of the UK animals is of known provenance then they would be belangeri I guess, as I think they only share their range with minor and there wouldn't be too much confusion between those two.

Thank you - I'm sure you realise that I am very careful about selecting the shots I post here.
