Northern White Rhinoceros at Dvur Kralove, 27/08/12

Ceratotherium simum cottoni

The single female Nabire, last individual in Europe (housed with a single male Southern White).

My third time seeing this taxon and sadly could well be my last. Even sadder, having seen the Dvur group before the shipment back to Africa, as well as the San Diego pair, I've seen every confirmed living individual of Ceratotherium simum cottoni.

A sad honour indeed. Barring the unlikely hope of massive successes with the in-situ breeding programme in Africa, you may well be the last of us to see a living Ceratotherium simum cottoni altogether.

Gutted that I wasn't on this trip to see this animal, fingers crossed i make it beofre its too late.

Well, there was a carful of Zoochatters when I took this, so I'd have to share that honour. (the paddock is in the area no longer accessible on foot)

There are Zoochatters local to DK or SD who will undoubtedly see them after me, but I'm very glad (and lucky) to have seen any at all, let alone on three occasions.

The last female at Dvur is a very 'typical' cottoni with lovely fringe-y ears - you can see them better here: http://www.zoochat.com/410/northern-white-rhinoceros-dvur-kralove-27-a-289607/

I'd dearly like to see one before it's too late too. It is a sobering thought when it can be safely said that someone has seen every single individual in a species or subspecies.

Unfortunate. Sorry to hear you missed the trip, hope you made up for it with the recent Paignton trip! :(
It helpped a bit,was worth it just to see the look on JR's face when he saw his first Echidna!!

It wasn't the same without you! (still very good fun though - sorry!)

Worst thing of all is you missed out on Pilsen Zoo curator Martin Vobruba's own personal musical accompaniment to the Zoohistorica auction - a thing that has to be experienced to be believed! :D
