the waitoreke was a creature of Maori folklore elevated to 'real' status by the early European explorers who thought NZ 'had' to have mammals. It is commonly called the 'NZ otter'. There are two other photos on this gallery of the waitoreke sign that Willowbank has next to the otter enclosure.
