Old map of Burgers' Zoo

Probably around 1995
A hornbill, probably wreathed (Aceros undulatus), tough is difficult to identify from a small and not fully precise drawing.

There were indeed wreathed hornbills in the Bush in the beginning years, these were removed when the pair got into breeding mood and started to eat too much of the other birds and reptiles. Some years later they tried again with a single young hornbill, but this individual also harassed the other inhabitants of the Bush too much and was thus removed.

I have to say, the zoo did lose quite a few species. Some of which would be awesome to see back in the zoo

Interesting I thought the Black bears left around 92 and the Desert only opened in 94.

Though the mammal collection is reduced in size, in terms of species lost and gained, the quality of species gained is much higher than the ones lost. The mammal species present back then and absent now are:
Blesbok, Greater kudu, Common eland, Blue wildebeest, Bornean orangutan, Lowland tapir, Pygmy hippo, Harbor seal, Bongo, Hamadryas baboon, Black-backed jackal, Bush dog, House reindeer, Plains buffalo, Wisent, Ankole cattle, Prairie dog, Yak, Japanese macaque, Crested mangabey, Patas monkey, Bennet's wallaby, European wolf, Barbary sheep, American black bear, Bactrian camel, Llama, Greater mara & Kit fox, Lesser jerboa. The biggest loss in interesting species was the closing of the nocturnal house with Douroucouli, Two-toed sloth, Lesser kantjil (also present in the Bush then), Nine-banded armadillo, Greater galago (and I think also Senegal galago or was it a Mouse lemur?).

Mammal species gained since are:
Roan antelope, Beisa oryx, White-bearded wildebeest, Variegated rock squirrel, Cactus mouse, Merriam's kangaroo rat, Hispid cotton rat, Ringed seal, Golden jackal, Forest reindeer, Malayan sun bear, Binturong, Banteng, Eld's deer, Hog deer, Reeves' muntjak, Pig-tailed macaque, Dusky leaf monkey, Golden-cheeked gibbon, Golden-bellied mangabey, Swamp wallaby

Mammal species gained and lost in this time period include Lesser kudu, Thomson's gazelle, Red duiker, Kaama hartebeest, Swift fox, Yellow mongoose, Tree porcupine.

The bird collection has been dramatically downsized though. But in terms of enclosure quality the zoo has made huge leaps forwards, of what is gone now only the Wolf enclosure would be good enough for the current zoo.

I'm guessing House Reindeer is a sort of "mistranslation" for domestic Reindeer, but it conjured some interesting thoughts on what sort of problems Dutch deliverymen might encounter compared to the usual barking dogs of other countries.

@Chlidonias Yep. In Dutch pets are "huisdieren" --> house animals (and domestic animals are also sometimes called like that like the reindeer, cat and yak, but not e.g. dogs or camels :p). And if we are nitpicking domestic also means house (from the lating Domus).

@lintworm I visited the zoo in 1995 because of the opening of the Desert and the map dates from that time. So you're about the opening year.
