I like the name 'Kievet' for the lapwing, which I assume is the Flemish version of its call. My grandfather always used the name 'peewit', which is the English equivalent.
 
@gentle lemur Kievit is indeed the Dutch name for the Northern lapwing, and it is indeed based on the bird's call.

Although in decline I still see some northern lapwings in my region and I love hearing their calls and seeing their display flight in spring.
 
@KevinB Always amazes me how close dutch and Afrikaans is!
Blacksmith plovers are referred to as "Kiewits" in Afrikaans.
