On the Great Rock @ Budapest Zoo

There are only three institutions in Europe where You can see the 'Hagenbeck-style' rocks: Budapest Zoo, Hamburg Zoo and Vincennes Zoo, Paris. This rock was built at Budapest between 1909-1912, but after the Word War II visitors hadn’t got the possibility to walk on its pathways … but thanks to the renovation just a few months ago, visitors currently can climb this 34 meter height artificial rock again.

What species are tied in with the rock? Is it part of an actual animal exhibit or a primarily human feature? It's very neat looking.

There aren't living any animals in this part of rock on the photo. But around the rock there live example gorillas, barbary apes with barbary sheeps, brown bears, red pandas and dholes.

Dear Orycteropus
have you any detail concerning who made the original plan of this 'rock'? I suppose Carl Hagenbeck was directly involved in the project, but the others were his usual friends (Eggenschwyler etc.) or Hungarians?

Dear colobus,
the technical designer of the "rock" was Gyula Végh, a Hungarian architect, and a Hungarian sculptor made the model of the "rock".

How does this mountain or rock outcropping work as an exhibit? Is the deck in view primarily an overlook, or is there an animal exhibit through the cave opening?

On the walkway there are no animals display, but there are some exhibit around the rock, connecting to that, for gorillas, brown bears, dholes, blackbucks and some others.
