Javan Rhino

Onager

I know there are hundreds of photographs of the animals at Chester already, however I wanted to share some of my good ones from today and would be grateful for any feedback :).

Never too many pictures JR :), this is a wonderful shot, ongar are one of the major zoo animals I am yet too see, and I will hopefully me able too see some on a future trip to germany. Am I correct in thinking that only 2 collections in the UK exhibit this species?:)

A nice study of an under-appreciated animal.

Have you found out about Zootiereliste, cat-man?

See link here:- ZootierlisteHomepage

As you say, only Chester and Whipsnade now hold this animal. Kiang are held at the Highland Wildlife Park.

There is a school of thought that says that Onager and Kulan are actually the same animal, separated essentially by different languages being used for descriptive purposes. "Onager" is Greek, and "kulan" Mongol. Whether anyone has done any scientific work to prove or disprove this I have no idea.

The recent "Handbook of the Mammals of the World" (Volume 2 Hoofed Mammals) recognises onager and kulan as distinct sub-species.

Very nice photo.
