This whole exhibit (the old one that is) has always been very ugly and dated and got worse when they added more climbing stuff(which was obviously a good thing in itself). I think they have tried to mask the pipes by doing this but I look forward to a complete revamp of this outside enclosure at some stage, it is still pretty awful.
While this looks rather ugly, I quite like the idea of using one suitably disguised pipe as an easy, instant ape shelter. I could see them at a zoo near me, possibly blending into the vegetation and proving popular with the residents.
