renovated panda exhibit chapultepec zoo
Looks very nice :), Mexico city is high on my list of places i'd like to travel to one day, so of course I'd visit the zoo there. Does anyone have any museum recommendations in the city ? Also, does Mexico city have a rapid transport system?

Answers,answers,
1.- Panda express, the oriental food chain, paid for the nice renovation of the panda exhibit at chapultepec zoo and sponsers the animals. 2 female pandas are at chapultepec, Xin Xin and Shuan shaun. Another chapultepec panda, Xin Hua is on loan to the Guadalajara zoo. All are females and were born at chapultepec. Xin Xin is offspring of the London Zoo panda, Chia chia. They are not owned by the chinese government.
2. Chapultepec zoo has over 250 species and over 2000 animals, with great success with our endemic species, the xochimilco axolotl and the volcano rabbit. It is free, but very overcrowded on sundays.
3.- Mexico city is a nice place to visit, actually much safer now than the rest of the country. From europe you can combine a stop here with a stay to cancun, which is better connected internationally actually. Most visitors do this. Near the zoo, is the museo nacional de antropologia, with an amazing archeological collection. Actual aztec ruins can be seen at the templo Mayor in the center of the city. I also like the frida kahlo and diego rivera museums. All these places can be reached by our subway system, el metro, which is the best in latin america.

Wow, thankyou very much for all that infomation carlos! That is very thourough and I now feel more confident about travelling to mexico city one day :). Is Guadalajara zoo worth making the trip from mexico city to go and see? Or are all of the species there also kept in mexico city? Yourself is clearly very fluent in english, so is the language barrier a problem when visiting mexico city? Members of my family have visited cancun and I believe it is no problem there?

I wasn't aware that these pandas belong to Mexico rather than China. Does anyone know how many pandas there are in captivity that do not belong to China?

^ the previous 3 living in mexico, and an elderly male, bao-bao in the berlin zoo. He is the only one of the 'diplomatic gift panda's' left.

Is Boa-Boa is too old to reproduce now? It would be interesting if there were more and a breeding population of non-chinese pandas was formed (I appreciate this will probably never happen).

^theoretically, he isn't beyond breeding age, however, he has never shown intrestest of mating with any of the 3 females he's been paired with, even going so far to rip one of the ears of a female! However, A.I could still be an option.
