Passenger Pigeon Memorial

It reads:
Martha was born in Chicago one of a small of captive passenger pigeons. In 1902 she was shipped to the Cincinnati Zoo to join other passenger pigeons living in this building. By 1907 only three remained here, or anywhere, two old male birds and Martha. The last male died in 1910. In years that followed Martha was given the finest foods and the best care, but she never saw another of her kind. As she waited, silent and alone of her perch, people from far and near came to see her. On September 1, 1914, she slipped from her perch, and at 1 p.m. that day was found dead on the floor.
