Wow! that looks impressive.

The logistics/instinct/learnt behaviors and diet intake for this group would be hard to imagine.

But I doubt if the smell is so good

Alan

That did not occur to me, that could be overwhelming down wind!

I love when visiting a new zoo that even before l can see it l can smell it, and l love the smell of a zoo.

The smell of 5,000 Patagonian sealions mmm probably not so good dead fish.......

Haha, you're right, the smell is absolutely terrible. The rocks are stained dark brown with fishy faeces. As you approach and see the island in the distance, you're also greeted with the aroma of this huge colony and its island.
It was a really amazing sight, and the abundance of fish in this area must be unimagineable to support the sealions and all the seabirds (there's a scattered penguin colony too, I saw one in the water but couldn't get a photo).
The islands are part of a nature reserve, and boats can't get too close, but tourists are allowed to swim/dive with the sealions and the fish. I'd have loved to join the group I was with, but with my broken leg I was lucky to even get on the boat. Maybe next time - on a zoochat trip? ;)
