Salt contains chlorides. It is possible to create chlorides by adding salt to the water and then removing the sodium. You're then left with the same principle as adding chlorine to the pool. This would be the only reason for adding salt to the water. As opposed to having sea water, which is different. Is it sea water, or mains water with salt added?
