Penguin Exhibits

The old otters exhibit but is now home to Magellanic Penguins.

Very nice looking exhibit, but unless there are other birds here with flight capabilities, they could lose the canopy. Or does it serve as insulation from the elements?

Or maybe it's to exclude mosquitoes, which can carry avian malaria, West Nile fever etc.....many US zoos have lost penguins to these diseases in outdoor settings.

Your right, I remember reading that Woodland Park Zoo lost a couple of penguins a month or two after the opening of their new penguin exhibit.

Another benefit is that it will exclude herons and gulls and so reduce food costs, as all the food offered will end up in the penguins!

The keeper had said they had added the mesh topping to keep out wild animals, definatly after the wild otter got in the exhibit.
