Persian Leopard

This was what Marwell's leopard enclosure looked like till it's reconstruction in 2003. It held Persian Leopards since it was built in 1972, and when the amurs moved into the renovated exhibit, the last remaining Persian Leopard, Sita, spent the rest of her life in part of the old lion enclosure till her death in 2005. 1998.

thanks for all these old photos

wish marwell still had persians, amurs are so common, (what about you)

I agree, Persians would be a great species for Marwell to get back or indeed other collections. They are now only held on show at Chessington and they've had 2 litters I think.
The Enclosure didnt look to bad - Great size and very tall just rather bare - but it did include a few mature trees from the pics that i've seen.

I'll just correct an error in my post at the top of the page; Marwell initially kept African Leopard hybrids when they opened (hence the the enclosure's location in the 'African Area', during Marwell's short term use of zoogeoraphic zones) and Persians didn't arrive till somepoint in the eighties. :)

they were very lucky to recieve persians, only a few were in collections and they were thought to be extinct in the wild
