I really wanted to see these because I recently read a chapter about them in the WAZA book. But I had forgotten about them until I got there and saw them on the map - I very nice surprise.

They are lovely- the head and neck is almost a violet- colour. Several places in the UK have them, including Colchester (about 4) and the little Newquay Zoo in Cornwall(2.1) . At Newquay the enclosure is a little hill and ditch and the deer are often very close at eyelevel with no barriers between- great for photos. see Newquay Gallery- should be first photo now since I made a comment....
The wonderful Rusa alfredi can currently be seen in four UK zoos - Chester, Colchester, Newquay and West Mids. According to Zootierliste there are 18 other European collections keeping the species.
I love 'em - if nothing else it's nice to see zoos being enthusiastic about a deer species.
