....but, of course, a very large number of these are not on show (and wouldn't make a very good display if they were). Even so, with what is on show, I'm struggling to think of many places that come close, beyond the obvious German giants (Berlin, Walsrode etc).

True enough. But based on my two visits, they seem to 'rotate' the small mammals in particular. It would be a great zoo to live nearby, as even every few months I'm sure you'd find a slightly different selection on show.
