I saw 12 cages for pairs, and there’s 81 pairs of piping plovers in northern michigan. I didn’t see a single plover, (this was my only area I had a camera) and each cage is surrounded by a 10000 square foot area. Anyone see one
What's the date on your photo? Most Piping Plovers should already be finished nesting and they'll be starting their southward migration in the next two weeks. It may be just a matter of timing. I don't live in that part of the U.S. so I can't speak for what the Piping Plover population is doing around the Great Lakes.
@Summer Tanager Should be 7/26. I have heard of sightings and it should just be males until the end of August. The population seems to be doing decent from what i have heard, with majority of the population along the sleeping bear dunes.
Thank you for the follow-up reply! I forgot that females tend to migrate south before the males and the nesting season should be just about over by now. I don't have any specific information, but I've heard the same that the Great Lakes population has been holding steady for the past decade or more.
