The larger of the two outdoor gibbon islands outside the Tropical House in the Asia Area in Planckendael. A family of northern white-cheeked gibbons (Nomascus leucogenys) has both of the two very spacious islands at their disposal furnished with five interconnected climbing frames and two very tall live trees. The smaller island used to house lar gibbons (Hylobates lar) but both are not used for the white-cheeked.
The Asia theme in Planckendael is the newest theme currently being developed. The first major part (Gir Forest and Tropical House) was opened in 2006 while the next major part (elephants) will open in 2012.
