The indoor gibbon island for northern white-cheeked gibbons (Nomascus leucogenys) inside the Tropical House in the Asia Area in Planckendael. I really like the idea of this island as the gibbons have a light, airy and warm space in here during the cold months. The gibbons have their sleeping dens behind wooden log. Only one weird thing: Why stop at just one climbing frame??? The gibbons also have two very large outdoor islands at their disposal.
The large tropical house features mammals, birds and reptiles from the rainforests of South East Asia.
The Asia theme in Planckendael is the newest theme currently being developed. The first major part (Gir Forest and Tropical House) was opened in 2006 while the next major part (elephants) will open in 2012.
