The exhibit for Australian short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus aculeatus) in the Oceania Area in Planckendael. Planckendael is one of only 6 European zoos that keep short-beaked echidnas (but the only ones who keep this subspecies). The echidnas can be viewed both indoors and outdoors and the barrier around their exhibit is so low that you are practically in the exhibit: Another installment in the series Things that would NEVER work in America.
The Oceania theme in Planckendael opened in 1998 and is one of the most extensive in Europe featuring wildlife from Australia and New Guinea.
