While I knew this would happen I am a little sad to see these go they are a large part of the history and the story of Chester. Non the less I'm sure what will become of this area will last just as long.
Wouldn't it be nice if they could salvage one of the pill-boxes to become part of the zoo's memorial for George Mottershead. He was so far ahead of his time in this age of recycling. Those pill-boxes have done a good job for more than 60 years.
For those who don't know the story, in the years following World War II, building materials were in short supply. Mr Mottershead got permission to salvage these small anti-invasion fortifications from the area around the zoo and he used them in the construction of the polar bear enclosure and various other new buildings around the zoo. Some can still be seen in the round enclosure beside the staff entrance, which used to be the sun bear's enclosure when it was the zoo's main entrance and the Upton bus from the city centre stopped right outside.
@blospz no and nore do they plan to any time soon. This was originally the polar bear but enclosure which was converted to an aviary for European birds and will now become a walk through lemur exhibit.
