This is Agata, a female polar bear that was born at the Cleveland zoo which gave her to the Guadalajara zoo. Once again, mexican zoos should really not have polar bears. The exhibit is larger than in the picture but is all concrete with a large pool. At least Yupik the other polar bear in a mexican zoo, zoologico de morelia, has a large shaded sandbook which she uses often. Agata did not have natural substrate in her exhibit when i took this photo. She is often seen holding that jug, which is her possesion. Morelia zoo says they will be rebuilding Yupik´s enclousure to make it more natural, but there is no news of a better exhibit for agata. This was the only really bad exhibit at Guadalajara zoo. Again, mexican zoos should not have polar bears, but why did Cleveland zoo send Agata to Guadalajara in the first place.
I never really liked the polar bear enclosure at Guadalajara but I think the worst mammal enclosures were the coyote and striped hyena ones (which are really just cages). For animals that walk long distances foraging at night they seem really insuficient. I'm guessing those two haven´t changed, right?
Hello Adam, great hear from you on zoochat again. You are right the canid exhibits are not that great either and are still the same. I just feel that since Morelia zoo had made commiments to improve Yupik the polar bear ¨s exhibit, Guadalajara should try to do something for Agata.
