Glancing at photos of the French Zoo Mulhouse made me consider how rapidly polar bear exhibits have altered just in the past few years. Toronto, Hogle, Brookfield, Como Park and Columbus in North America have all built new exhibits for those species in the past 5 years and in every case there is at least a substantial section of grass and a dominance of natural substrate in the enclosure. Kudos all around! It makes an enclosure like the one found at Pittsburgh Zoo, which is still fairly new, seem badly antiquated.
