This type of exhibit would have been state-of-the art in the sixties.Pretty depressing now though. With appropriate lighting, it could be o.k. for certain arid-zone lizards.

This meerkat exhibit might not even be the worst enclosure in what is a badly outdated section of the zoo.
An excerpt from my 2010 review:
Predators – An outdated building that has these species: African lion, Indochinese tiger, Pallas’ cat, black-footed cat, bobcat, Arabian wild cat, tayra, meerkat, cinereous vulture, small-clawed otter, a future beaver enclosure (under construction) and a mixed-species exhibit with 3 Prevost’s squirrels and 2 red pandas. Of those 12 enclosures only the lions, tigers, vultures and beavers have access to the great outdoors, while all the other animals are indoors in glass tanks. There aren’t even that many fancy murals on the walls, and instead there is peeling paint and an air of apathy. This building should be bulldozed!
Thanks for that information, and it is interesting how many Feline Houses in major zoos once held large mammals and as time and modern exhibits were created the species contained were downsized. Birmingham's Predators building has the possibility to be converted into an excellent Reptile House (replacing the current disappointing one) or a structure that holds smaller creatures if finances were not an issue.
Ive written my own master plan for Birmingham. Right now I am using Google maps to lay it out with respect to drainage and existing roads etc. When I am done I am going to do a complete thread about it. Basically I am playing real world Zoo Tycoon.
