The zoo's history book (see link below) states that Milwaukee County Zoo acquired 7 bonobos from Wassenaar Zoo in the Netherlands in 1986. The Dutch facility was closing and also sent Milwaukee 6 gorillas. Since then the breeding record has been impressive and Milwaukee now has at least 20 bonobos.

@snowleopard: according to the latest issue of Alive Magazine, Milwaukee has 21 bonobos - apparently the world's largest captive population.
@Wild Man: Milwaukee has six gorillas in two different troops. The bachelor troop consists of Maji Maji and Hodari. The family troop consists of silverback male Cassius, and females Naku, Shalia, and Femelle.
EDIT: Make that seven gorillas - Shalia gave birth to a male on Nov. 24th, which is now on display.
