I agree; they are one of my favourite species at Chester Zoo too. Those in Chester Zoo’s Elephant House are very impressive specimens; I don’t think I’ve ever seen better looking examples of the species anywhere else.
They were kept off-show, of course, for years and they were always there on the annual report - the mysterious name 'Pla Eesok'. Didn't really know what to expect when they went on show so the sheer size of them was bit of a surprise!
Yes, obviously there wasn’t space for this species in Chester Zoo’s aquarium.
However, given that Chester Zoo’s aquarium is small and rather old fashioned, it actually houses an excellent collection really interesting species There’s not many places where you can see six specimens of Australian lungfish or four different species of elephant-nosed fish. The Omani blind cave fish are really unusual too.
I agree, but a visit behind the scenes at the aquarium is even better!
Nice photo btw: I've tried once or twice, partly because I also love the pig-nosed turtles, but have never been happy with the results - the Elephant House is so dusty that the glass of the aquarium is usually horrible.
