I just don't get why they have put up so much mock-rock and then not covered up those ugly ugly buildings? It just seems like a waste of money and a job half-done.
Let's just focus on one detail here, which in many ways sums up the curious mix of messages embodied by this disasterous exhibit: the two fake rocks in the planter between the handrail and the moat. What possible purpose do they serve? To make you feel you are in a "natural environment?" To "transport you back to the Pleistocene?" To take your eye away from the utilitarian sheds and fences that are visible everywhere else? To teach you something about the biology/ecology of camels?
I can only shake my head, and remember with regret when I was excited to see what the San Diego Zoo was going to do next. Those days are gone.
