Pygmy Hippopotamus - Large Mammal House, 1999

Date is approximate.
I don't know if any other photos of this building are available. This is one of only a few surviving photographs from my childhood zoo visits to Lincoln Park, and I had no idea we even had it until a couple weeks ago; it had been lost with thousands of photographs of relatives and extended family, alongside a few lions.

@JVM Do you remember what species they had in here when you visited pre-African Journey? Was this primarily an elephant and hippo exhibit?

@DavidBrown During the late nineties, this building held African elephant, eastern black rhinoceros, pygmy hippopotamus and "baringo" giraffe. I had a guidebook at the time confirming these animals. In my youngest years or shortly before, the elephants were a mixed Asian-African pair and a lowland tapir was also present.

In addition, the site of the current African wild dog habitat held Mexican gray wolf, and sometime before that maned wolf, though the zoo did not always consider this part of Large Mammal House at the time.
