This complex of snakes has a messed up taxonomy baked in taxonomic vandalism. There’s five named species and one undescribed species (which is likely what this specimen is) in the Pseudechis australis complex. Before a 2017 study, only two species (P.australis and P.butleri) were seriously recognised due to the papers from Wells & Wellington and Hoser (yes, that is that same Hoser from today that ‘describes’ hundreds of fake species every year) not showing enough evidence to prove the validity of those species. That 2017 study proved that there were four new species and that three were already described (P.pailsei, P.rossignolii and P.weigeli) by the papers with sketchy evidence giving those people undeserved credit for the description of the species when it was really the people that worked on the 2017 study that proved they were distinct. The study didn’t describe the fourth species despite showing it was distinct and it remains undescribed.
