Thanks for uploading all of these photos from the Alexandria Zoo, and I would have thought that Egypt (being such a tourist-intensive nation) would have been far more contemporary in terms of animal welfare. Sadly just about every single animal enclosure at this zoo appears to be pure junk.
Egypt's latest zoo, the Africa Safari Park, seems to be heading in the right direction; Alexandria is not as frequently visited by tourists as Cairo, the Red Sea Riviera or the Nile in Upper Egypt, and most people don't even know that the zoo exists (even residents of the city). Just a few years ago it was privatised, and so doesn't have the government's input anymore. Even if it did, Egypt is a very poor country and puts relatively little money into its zoos. Egypt is unfortunately quite far behind in terms of animal welfare but is moving forwards - I will talk about this a bit more once I've reviewed the Giza Zoo.
It's like a parallel of Kuwait Zoo (plenty of money but not much apparent care), whereas Alexandria Zoo (and Egypt as a whole) hasn't much money, but they do seem to try their best.
As far as I can see, all Egyptian zoos I've visited have started off really well, at a very high standard, but don't change very much to catch up with the rest of the world.I'm sorry to say that there's not much care in Egypt either, though steps are being taken to improve the situation. Poverty and corruption are two big issues for the country, so animals come quite far down the list.
