One of the volunteers in the walkthrough said something to the effect that in Australia and New Zealand these are considered pests, and that the natives can't understand why we would want to keep captive populations over here :) Is this true?

Rainbow Lorikeets are very common and can form quite large flocks. They are also very noisy and some people may consider them pests, especially if the large flock roosts in a tree in your backyard.

Some people may not understand why you would want a captive population, but they are very popular over here as pets, handreared ones selling for several hundred dollars each, and there are a now a variety of colour morphs too.

We have a flock of around 60 that roost in the trees behind my house........not good to sleep with or wake up with ;)
