Rainbow Skink (Lampropholis delicata)
My little brother caught this Rainbow Skink at my home north of Auckland in late December, and put it in a jar to show me (with some leaves so it would be more comfortable). There are hundreds of these skinks around our house, and they regularly come inside. They eat ants mainly I think. They are not a native species, but were (accidentally) introduced to the North Island from Australia in the 1960s. They have also been introduced to Hawaii.
As far as I know, there are none in zoos in NZ (or Australia for that matter), but I'm not sure why. They are very skittish, but I guess all small skinks are.
