RainForest Building - Fishing Cat Exhibit

July 27th, 2010.
Ive seen fishing cats at Columbus zoo,Smithsonian National zoo,Cincinnati zoo and at Cleveland zoo and I liked Clevelands fishing cat exhibit the best, sides the rainforest building is the best thing in that zoo. What a great job by the cleveland metropark zoo.

National Zoo's fishing cat exhibit is amazing, and though I haven't been to Cleveland, it must be pretty damn good too.

I have not seen a fishing cat exhibit with underwater viewing. That is awesome! Do they stock fish in the pool so you actually get to see the cats diving underwater?

the National Zoo's exhibit has underwater viewing, but being outdoors the glare is awful...

Cleveland has only stocked fish in here on occasion basically as enrichment at keepers discretion. They certainly should do it more often. We certainly concur with this being a very nice Fishing Cat exhibit that stacks up with any in the country.

The Cincinnati Zoo now has an underwater viewing window in their Fishing Cat exhibit, and there are keeper presentations during which fish are stocked in the pool for the cats. There is a similar presentation given with a Fishing Cat during the daily Cheetah Encounters which take place during the summer months.

Very cool, but it is only visible in reversed dark blue lighting now, right? And how do they do the one in Cheetah Encounters - do they wheel out a small aquarium for the presentation? (I have seen this done with a serval at the animal show at The Living Desert).

Unfortunately, yes, it's only visible in the reversed dark blue lighting. It's still a very interesting presentation, but it would be better if it were in more natural lighting. The presentation in the Cheetah Encounter takes place in a mock rock pool in the Cheetah Encounter yard. This is a new addition with the expansion of the Cheetah Encounter that took place several years ago. You don't get the underwater view, but at least it is natural lighting.

Do they use live fish in these demos? there would be an outcry here, I don't think we can feed anything live above insects to animals in UK but I may be wrong.
