The zoo keeps the red panda complex open, although the last individual, "Kelú", has passed away on august 2023. The visitors can walk through the pathway, observe the statues, educational setups and the empty exhibits.

Interesting that they would leave it open even without any animals kept in the complex. Does the Santiago Zoo plan to acquire more red pandas in the future?
@Loxodonta Cobra
I think they intend to acquire more individuals in the future, as the complex is being well kept and clean (vegetation on the pathways and the enclosure trimmed, clean statues and signage, etc). Besides, the zoo's map on the entrance labels the exhibit as "Panda rojo - proximamente" (Red panda - soon). We both know intentions to keep a species is not exactly being able to obtain it, but I understand they will try.
@carlos55
The possible and most common issue public institutions like Santiago would face in that regard is the lack of resources. A transfer of an animal from the other side of the globe is, of course, no joke in therms of costs.
