The books used to be on the far end (by the bright exit doors). Now they are end by stairs to lower half. There is a second book shelf across from this one (out of camera right). The main gift shop is now given over to cases featuring Indian baskets and jewelry and minerals. In other words, more expensive gifts that affluent tourists visiting the Southwest might be enticed to buy. The lower level gift shop (behind the camera) still sells t-shirts and postcards and desert themed food items (prickly pear jam, Navajo tea, etc).
Yes, I was just looking at this an thinking of the paltry selection of books on sale in most zoos: children's picture books, 99%, with the very occasional more high-brow volume. And I like the sound of prickly pear jam!
