Ijuma, female reticulated giraffe, with her new female calf, born around a week or so ago.
This was the calf's first day out in the paddock, and it took a long while for the keepers to get them both back into the housing around 6pm; endless patience and several strategically placed offerings of food to mum were key in the end!
Nice little calf. Do you know if this Ijuma's first calf at Whipsnade and whether she bred before coming here?
I was surprised on the ITV Zoo programme to hear- I think I'm correct here- that Ina's calf that died was her first- I had presumed given her age that she had bred previously before coming to Whipsnade.
I believe this is Ijuma's second calf -her first being Jengo (m), born 30/09/2012 and sent to Yorkshire Wildlife Park a couple of months ago. The ZSL announcement at the time stated that Jengo was her first.
