Are the elephants usually separated from the giraffes and the other species? As I understand there is a sort of common area for all of the animals isn't there?
The largest part of the exhibit is separated into two adjoining enclosures. All the animals may have access to the entire area or some in one and some in the other. There are always some giraffes in the giraffe-only enclosure for giraffe-feeding opportunities. There are always some elephants in the elephant-only enclosure.
There is potential for a great deal of variation
Sounds interesting. Are there ever problems with aggression? Do the zebras and other species enter the elephant and giraffe enclosures as well or is that closed off when those species are in the larger one? It sounds like I really need to check this zoo out.
@elefante either, I have seen it both ways in the past, but as I said I don't believe that they currently are allowed to free roam while the new elephants (and calf) are still getting accustomed. The zoo does not have a mature bull, but there is a male around 10 years old and a male calf born last year.
