Yeah, nice to see they're getting the Australia exhibit back up to snuff. I was of the opinion the whole area should have been demolished once the Koalas left.
Maybe okapikpr does. I don't. I'll give you a general idea though. When it opened in 2002, it was the same size as the current exhibit. They poured a concrete walkway through the exhibit and made fence posts in the style of the African exhbit. The idea was the animals could pass from one side to the other and let the guests have some close ups. However, there were several fatal flaws in this. One, the exhibit was entirely manned by volunteers; see my comment in another thread about the old director being cheap. The volunteers we had were great, but besides summer, the zoo would be lucky to have more than 2 volunteers a day during the week. Even then, half the time if a wallaby would cross the path, kids would run up and try to grab them. Eventually they just closed the whole exhibit off and just let people watch from the path.
