The old rhino paddock at the far southeastern corner of the zoo. Although black rhinos tend to be less tractable than whites, these were so calm that keepers used to sit on their backs. Until there was a change of director and the practice ceased abruptly.
This photo truly brings back some memories. As a rhino fan the trip to Taronga when I was little involved an early visit to the rhinos and then we finished there as well. I lament the rhinos no longer being at Taronga considering how much space is now devoted to elephants.
Back in the day the rhinos were rather special having this "exercise yard" in addition to the concrete pens, as opposed to most animals which only had smaller concrete pens. I'll dig around for some of my old photos of this era.
