That must have been annoying. When I used to go to the zoo with my younger cousins,they used to do irritating things like roar at the lions or knock on the glass to wake up sleeping animals,which they were promptly scolded for. It irritates me even more to see a fully-grown adult do the exact same thing. I don't even understand what crosses through people's minds. It's like they don't realize sleep is essential to animals as much as it is to humans. Rant over.
