rockpool tanks at Auckland Museum

12 September 2012

Starfish tank nearest to the camera, then an anemone tank, then a tank with anemones and a drummer. The area behind the tanks is a rockpool diorama, not for live animals.

The museum has several live animal displays scattered through the collection. The reason I visited was mainly to see the Weird And Wonderful room which apparently has many live animals, but that area was closed for renovations until November!

Oh no!

The room, last time I visited anyway, is a multi-level area, with many stuffed animals, as well as a large number of preserved fishes and other animals in alcohol. There are also drawers of shells, rocks, insects, birds and other cool stuff. Live animals were few, but included tarantulas, cockroaches and possibly some fish, geckos, frogs and rats. It is definitely worth a visit!

@Chlidonias: Did you see Rajah on the ground floor?

I was a bit disappointed the area was closed!

I completely forgot about looking for the elephant. What happened was that we had a whale boat booked for which we had to be at the quay at noon. We had been told the museum opened at 8.30am so we thought we would have plenty of time, and hence went there in the morning rather than the afternoon before. (Bad decision!). Usually I check opening times etc myself, because I like to be prepared, but I neglected to do so. Turned out the museum doesn't open till ten, so we really just looked round the natural history section on the first floor, and even that we were really rushing. Next time I go back I'll allow a lot more time.

The live displays they did have on show were all really nice. In fact I'm stealing the water boatmen idea for myself.

p.s. in the tropical house at the Domain (a few minutes walk from the museum) there are two Amorphophallus titanum plants, one on either side of the water-lily pond. Worth a look. This house opens at nine.

Guts.

That area, fernery and glasshouses, are very nice. Presumably they weren't flowering?

photos of the Amorphophallus titanum plants. As you probably know, they only have one leaf at a time: the mottled multi-branched tree-like thing is that leaf!! Really bizarre.

There was another smaller species there as well but I can't remember which one. The smaller species had flowered in the house before, but neither of their titanum have yet done so.
