Royal Spoonbill (Platalea regia)

Love spoonbills. The two species I haven't seen (Royal and Yellow-billed) are right up there in my imaginary list of 'top birds I want to see'. :D

Yeah, they are very unique indeed. Too bad you don't get to see them very often outside Australia. At the same time, I assume the Australian public must find it a pity their zoos exhibit mostly native fauna. For us of course, it's a real treat! :)

Could you believe that on a few occasions I've seen both species at the same time in this swampy sort of dam on my parents farm? Although they are the only two species of spoonbill that I have seen so you're beating me by 4 :)

Call that one a score draw then shall we? :D

Eurasian, African and Roseate are all pretty straightforward to find in European zoos. Wild Eurasians are about in the UK, but I've never yet managed to see them. Black-faced I've only seen once; on a behind-the-scenes tour at Walsrode in 2007.

The other two will probably have to wait 'til I can make it Down Under (which I'm determined to do at some point!).
