Sabre antelope skull in banded mongoose enclosure

Copenhagen Zoo, March 1, 2009. If you look closely you will notice the horns of an antelope skull in the middle of the picture. I assume that one of the zoo´s sabre antelopes must have recently died just before my visit. I took another picture from the other side of the enclosure but it became all blurry. Anyway, the skull had visible traces of meat and blood on it so it cannot have been in the enclosure for very long.

Nice... lol
How do they strip all the flesh off? One of my college tutors bought in a horse skull that had been dipped in acid to remove all the flesh, same thing maybe?

I am, personally, totally OK with this practise. I assume that the skull was placed there "as it was" after it was severed from the body and that the little mongooses had a feast. I was not aware of the fact that they are partly predators, but I learned that from reading the signs by the exhibit.

Interesting, good enrichment idea :)
Bet some parents complained that their children had been affected by seeing a severed head though

Yeah, probably! In my (southern) part of Sweden we have "Skånes Djurpark" - appr. "The Zoo of Scania". Just a year ago I read a stupid complaint in my morning paper from some mummy... her kid had got scared from seeing a head (from some animal) in the wolverine´s enclosure...
