This was taken in the original 'Mammal House' ape enclosures- the Bornean orangutans never left that area until they left the zoo for good. The rectangular grillemesh being distinctive in these cages too.
From memory 'Sandakan' was the first offspring of their original female 'Bali', with her 2nd mate 'Giles'. Giles was originally kept with the Sumatran female Gina( who is still at Jersey) and fathered a hybrid baby 'Tunku' with her before being re-paired with 'Bali' after her first mate 'Oscar' died.. 'Bali' is long dead too but 'Giles' is(or was until quite recently) still alive at ZooBeauval(?) in France.

Currently housing the unlikely combination of Leptodactylus fallax frogs (indoors) and red-billed choughs.
It's about done though, however. What remains of the building is in a sorry, sorry state, and the current weather is going to leave it much the worse for wear.
