Oh! So basically they will abandon the current hummingbird aviary and will translocate into the children zoo? During my visit they only hold a very tame Florisuga mellivora and some Chlorostilbon notatus. Looks like they plant to keep the jacobins and add the superb RED-BILLED STEAMERTAIL!!!!!!!!!!!! Trochilus polytmus, the type species for the whole hummingbird family!
@Kakapo It will be on the same location but greatly expanded. The children's zoo will grow to include that area, as my overlay in the news thread shows.
The only species of hummingbird SDZ currently maintains is a singular Anna’s hummingbird. The jacobin and sapphire are now presumably deceased.
That said, importing the species on the concept art probably wouldn’t be too hard for them. Imports of other species to other institutions from Jamaica are in the works, and a number of hummingbirds were imported from Peru in the early 2000s (sadly, most have died off since).
Oh! Sad news. I was lucky then for seeing both species, as Anna's would have been much less interesting (it is the most common hummingbird in the wild in San Diego, very easy to see...)
As far as I understand, it's not possible to import anymore hummingbirds from native countries, so the stock will depend entirely of captive breed already existing ones.
Well, that’s what everyone said. Then, oasis hummingbirds, giant hummingbirds, sparkling violetear and long-tailed sylphs were imported. 3 of them spread to multiple zoos, and 3 still are kept today, even if in small numbers. And as I already mentioned, there is an pending import from Jamaica to a place which seems overlooked by all ZooChatters...
In the US, native species can also be kept, and 10 are.
